Dr Sandy Cooper

Veterinarian & Managing Director

Background:

Sandy grew up on a farm in the Awatere Valley, in Marlborough; went to boarding school in Christchurch and graduated from Massey University as a veterinarian in the same class as her husband, Doug. There were only 3 other female veterinarians who graduated that year, in a class of 46!  After working for a short time in Palmerston North practices, they moved South and worked at what is now Wakiwi Vets, before setting up their own practice at 226 Elles Road Invercargill. It was a Mixed practice until Doug had to stop working due to ill health.

Sandy has continued to run the practice as a dedicated Companion Animal practice since then. Always passionate about doing the best for the patients and their families, Sandy always strives to keep up to date with Continuing Education and keeping the practice up to date with equipment and procedures. She gets enormous satisfaction at seeing staff thrive to reach their potential and enjoy their work at returning pets home and healthy to their families.

Sandy is the veterinarian looking after the Tuatara at the Southland Museum and Art Gallery and has been involved in helping DOC, especially looking after the Kakapo.

Personality:

Sandy has a grown-up family with grandchildren, living locally, in Wellington and in Brisbane.

In her spare time, she enjoys reading, movies, the theatre and arts and time with her friends. She has travelled in the past and most recently, in 2019, visited the Amazon rainforest and the Galapagos Islands, which was a real treat.

She has a new puppy, Daisy, and 2 cats- Tigger and Eevee at home.
